Idar-Oberstein: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

Idar-Oberstein brings together several places where the history of gemstones and industry can be seen firsthand. The German Mineralienmuseum houses a crystal hall described as unique in Germany; the museum also displays one of the smallest cameos in the world. The Historische Weiherschleife is the last waterwheel-powered gemstone-cutting mill on the Idarbach. There is a gemstone exhibition there, while pedal boating is available on the Kallwiesweiher.

Culture

The Bengelweg is a short, accessible themed trail covering Oberstein’s metalworking and jewelry industry from the early 20th century to the present day. The history of gemstones can also be explored at the Steinkaulenberg visitor mine, which features a gemstone camp and a geological nature trail. The Steinkaulenberg gemstone mine is also the only gemstone tunnel in Europe open to visitors.

Experiences

Ranger-led and themed tours are offered in Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.
