Landscape and water

Most District encompasses the Krušné hory, a southeastern extension of the České středohoří, the Žatecká plošina and the Most Basin. Mostecké jezero is a reclaimed lake created by flooding the former Ležáky lignite mine near Most. It covers 311 hectares, is approximately 2.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 59 metres. The Fláje Reservoir is located near Český Jiřetín and was built on the Flájský potok to supply water.

Bořeň [Bílina-Újezd], Vlčí hora, Stropnik and Medvědí Skála are located in the surroundings of Most District. Osek Monastery is also in the vicinity of Most District. Purschenstein, Sukoslav and Hradek Oltářík are located in the wider regional area.

Zlatník is a forested phonolite peak rising to 521 metres, with views of the České středohoří and the Krušné hory.

Water, trails and winter

The Matylda recreational area in Most has a 39-hectare natural body of water intended for outdoor swimming. It also features cycle paths and a four-kilometre asphalt track for inline skating and cycling.

The Český Jiřetín ski resort has three pistes, four lifts and a 100-metre natural toboggan run leading towards the Church of St John the Baptist.

Culture and history

The late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Most was moved 841 metres in 1975 using an unusual relocation technique. It contains a rich collection of paintings and sculptures, as well as an exhibition of Gothic and Renaissance art from northwestern Bohemia. Alongside the church, the Baroque Hospital of Most and the Church of the Holy Spirit form a cultural heritage complex.

Five Art Nouveau houses on Smetana Street in Litvínov were built between 1901 and 1906; the Church of the Archangel Michael and Voigtovy sady are located next to them. The tower of Hněvín offers views over Most, of the volcanic peaks of the České středohoří and of the Krušné hory.

The Podkrušnohorské Technical Museum focuses on underground and open-cast mining, coal processing and other uses of coal, as well as the chemical industry in the lignite basins of northwestern Bohemia.
