Culture and history

The history of the village is reflected in several architectural monuments. The church in Želenice was first mentioned in 1352 under the name Zelenycz. Construction work on the new church in Želenice, the Church of Saint Wenceslas, took place from 1847 to 1848. The former rectory of Želenice, house no. 27, is now classified as a state-protected monument.

The protected Želenice farmstead, no. 43, is also part of the historic villagescape. It dates from the first half of the 19th century and forms part of the historic buildings around the village square. The farmstead consists of two residential buildings and two agricultural buildings. A four-sided wayside shrine with niches, including one with a crucifix, is dated to 1583.

Želenický vrch also shapes the traditional history of the village: a quarry for the extraction of phonolite, known in Czech as Znělec, has existed on its northern slope since the last century.

Landscape and nature

The area of Želenice in the Most District belongs geographically to the Bořeň section of the Měrunická vrchovina highlands. At 539 m, Bořeň is the highest peak in this section.

The Bílina River is the defining watercourse in the administrative area of Želenice. Along the Bílina, a relatively extensive floodplain of considerable biological importance stretches from České Zlatníky to its confluence with the Liběšický potok.

The area of Želenice lies in one of the warmest and driest regions of the Czech Republic, which has particularly shaped the development of steppe communities.

Paths and railway

Želenice is listed by the municipality as a starting point for marked hiking trails. Railway connections on lines 130 and 131 pass through Želenice station.
