Komárno District: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The western section of the Danube Limes ran for almost 600 km along the Danube from Bad Gögging in Germany via Austria to Iža in Slovakia, following the northern and eastern borders of the Roman provinces of Raetia, Noricum and northern Pannonia.

Culture

The so-called Old Fortress in Komárno was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. The fortress is part of the most extensive fortification system in Central Europe, which extends across the territory of Slovakia and Hungary. The site is open to the general public all year round.

The historic entrance gates connecting the historic centre of Komárno with Nádvorie Európy are each named after a Hungarian ruler.

The history of the Hurbanovo observatory dates back to 1871. The observatory is open to the public during the day and in the evening, also offering observations of the night sky. The visitor programme includes an individual tour of the permanent exhibition at the M.-T.-Konkoly Museum.

The ship mill in Kolárovo is the last surviving example of a floating mill and the only ship mill in Slovakia. The ship mill houses the Water Milling Museum. The ship mill welcomed visitors daily from 10:00 to 17:00; guided tours took place every 15 minutes.

Visitors to the Kelemantia Roman and Ethnographic Museum in Iža can also be received outside regular opening hours by prior arrangement.

Nature

Číčovské mŕtve rameno lies partly in the cadastral area of the municipality of Číčov in Komárno District and partly in the cadastral area of Kľúčovec in Dunajská Streda District. It is part of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area, with a total area of 12,284.5 ha; this forms a substantial part of the Dunajské luhy Ramsar site, with a total area of 14,488 ha.

Číčovské mŕtve rameno contains rare aquatic and wetland communities and is designated as a habitat of international importance for waterbirds.

Ostrovné lúky is an important breeding and survival habitat for the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus).

Cycling

The Bratislava–Štúrovo section of EuroVelo 6 is an easy 168 km road route along the Danube and passes through Komárno.

Thermal baths

The thermal bath in Komárno draws thermal water from a 1,060-metre-deep borehole, from which water emerges at a temperature of 45.2 °C and is channelled into indoor and selected outdoor pools. The outdoor area of the thermal bath in Komárno offers visitors up to seven different uses.

Thermál Nesvady thermal bath is open all year round and uses geothermal water that emerges from a depth of 1,504 metres at a temperature of 62 °C. It has a seasonal children’s pool for children up to six years old.

The thermal water in Patince is believed to have positive effects on the musculoskeletal system.
