Holiday apartment in Svätý Peter: vineyards, churches and the Zichy manor house

Svätý Peter combines a wine tradition documented for centuries with churches from several periods and a varied landscape. Svätý Peter is also home to the Zichy manor house, the plane tree planted in the park and the family crypt; wine cellars continue to be used to this day.

Landscape

The municipality of Svätý Peter includes floodplain and inundation soils as well as sandy loess terraces and hilly landscapes with extensive sand dunes. The municipality also encompasses arable land, vineyards and acacia forests. The south is dominated by fertile fields. As a result, different landscape forms come together within the same municipality, from wet soils and sandy elevations to areas shaped by agriculture.

Wine

Vineyards have been documented in Svätý Peter since 1715. Svätopeterský rizling is considered the best-known varietal wine from the vineyards in the municipality. The wine cellars and press houses were built at two locations: in the “Nové Vinohrady” area along the cellar road towards Komárno and in the “Strážny Vrch” area along the cellar road towards Madar.

This cellar landscape is still in use today. More than 200 wine cellars remain active in Svätý Peter. Wine tastings take place in the large dome of the St Peter Vini wine cellar. St Peter Vini offers wines from its own production, which are stored in barrels in its own wine cellar; the cellar can be visited. The XIII International Welschriesling Wine Festival is also among the documented events held in the town: it took place on 5 April 2025 at the Cultural Centre in Svätý Peter.

Culture

The first written mention of Svätý Peter dates from 1332. It is associated with the consecration of a parish and a church dedicated to Saint Peter. The later church history includes the Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, which was built in 1730 on the site of a Gothic church. The Catholic church was severely damaged by the major earthquake of 1763. Count Miklós Zichy arranged for its restoration and commissioned decorative windows, which are still visible today.

The Reformed Evangelical Church in Svätý Peter is Neoclassical and was built in 1784 as a Toleration Church. An Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession was built in Svätý Peter in 1956. The town thus preserves religious buildings and traces of ecclesiastical history from several centuries.

Another historical connection leads to the manor house of the Zichy family. During military unrest, it served as the county house, where county assemblies were held. During the Revolution of 1848–1849, the Zichy manor house accommodated György Klapka and János Damjanich; the building subsequently served as a military hospital. The current technical condition of the Zichy manor house is inadequate.

The historical surroundings also include a plane tree planted in the park on the occasion of the birth of the Zichy family's daughter, which is now protected as a natural monument. The family crypt in Svätý Peter contains the remains of Countess Fábryová, her husband and their six-year-old son.
