Holiday apartment in Čalovec: Nature and history on Žitný ostrov
Čalovec is a place where landscape and history can be seen side by side. The municipality is home to the protected Čalovecké rašelinisko area. At the same time, Čalovec lies on Žitný ostrov in a distinctly flat lowland landscape that, due to its location, was often exposed to flooding. The area’s long settlement history is also part of the character of the place: the area around Čalovec is considered to have been continuously inhabited since the Early Bronze Age.
Nature
The landscape is particularly vivid at the Dropie site. It lies in the Ostrovné lúky bird protection area, a typical agriculturally used lowland landscape with meadows, pastures, wetlands and meanders lined with pollarded willows. Open spaces, water-shaped habitats and the characteristic rows of willows are therefore among the defining landscape elements of this area.
The Čalovec Lúky area of Dropie includes an original “tanya” serving as an information centre, a reed pavilion and an activity area. The “Príbeh krajiny” educational trail also runs through the visitor area of Dropie. The various stations and facilities are thus situated in a landscape where agricultural use, wetlands and natural structures are closely interconnected.
Leisure
A seasonal addition to the natural and landscape areas is the Letné kúpalisko. The outdoor swimming pool has one pool, a recirculation system and solar-heated water. Its capacity is 300 people. Its seasonal operation and specific facilities make the pool an independent part of the local leisure offering.
History
The archaeological site in the municipality covers a broad period of history. It includes an urn cemetery and a settlement of the North Pannonian culture from the Early Bronze Age, a Celtic burial ground, a Roman-barbarian settlement, a Slavic-Avar burial ground and a Slavic settlement from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. The first written mention of Čalovec dates from 1268; it appears in a boundary charter of Komárno Castle.
The evangelical house of prayer in Čalovec was completed in 1975. The Reformed church was originally built in 1801–1802 as a Classicist church and was rebuilt and given a Romantic design between 1870 and 1877. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
Two monuments commemorate the history of the 20th century. The monument to the victims of the First World War dates from 1931 and was created by the sculptor Gyula Berecz from Komárno. The monument to the victims of the Second World War dates from 1998 and is the work of the sculptor János Nagy.
Transport
The railway line from Komárno to Kolárovo is part of the area’s transport history. It opened on 8 November 1914, and Čalovec was its central station. The historic Čalovec railway station building has been preserved to this day. It is a single-storey rectangular building with side façades facing the gables.
