Holiday apartment in Chotín: Archaeology, church and Chotínske piesky

Chotín combines archaeological sites, preserved architectural heritage and protected sandy landscapes. The history around the village is particularly multifaceted at the archaeological sites: Disznólegelö contains a Thracian burial ground from the Early Iron Age with 310 inhumation graves and 152 cremation graves. Felsö - Kenderföld contains a significant Celtic burial ground with 47 graves, including 4 cremation graves and 43 inhumation graves. The Delihegy site also contains a large settlement from the Roman period. The Chotín burial ground is one of the largest burial grounds of the Hallstatt culture; up to 1,000 graves are believed to be located there.

History

The past is also present beyond the archaeological sites. The Podunajské Museum in Komárno displays archaeological material from a Celtic burial ground in Chotín, including a bronze armlet decorated with filigree ornaments. Chotín is also home to the Lilla Gallery and Village Museum. It houses an ethnological collection belonging to the retired teacher Ernő Zajos, as well as various exhibitions. Through local cultural heritage education in Chotín, pupils were able to learn about traditional activities such as hemp cultivation, bread baking, rope making, broom making, wood carving and weaving.

Culture

The Calvinist church of Chotín is part of the local architectural heritage. It was built in 1792 in the Classical style with several Baroque architectural elements. It was repaired from 1857 to 1862 and has been preserved to this day, with minor subsequent alterations and repairs. The church also has a wooden pulpit with a sounding board, built in 1857 and decorated with Hungarian folk motifs. Each station thus sets its own distinct and comprehensible accent.

Nature

The Chotínske piesky protected landscape area gives the landscape its own distinctive character. Since 2004, it has also been an area of European importance and includes inland sand communities with numerous endangered plant and animal species. Thus, alongside the archaeological and cultural-historical sites, Chotín also has an explicitly protected natural area.

Orientation

The educational trail to Chotín’s points of interest can be walked in both directions. The numbering of its stations is intended for orientation and precise location on the map, not to indicate the order. Delihegy is one of the stations on this educational trail. Rest areas have been established around Chotínske jazero; fishing spots have also been designated at Chotínske jazero.

The educational trail can be geographically contextualized using two distances: a local bus stop on the Komárno–Štúrovo route is 200 m from the educational trail to Chotín’s points of interest. Chotín railway station is 2.5 km from the educational trail to Chotín’s points of interest.
