Imeľ between the Nitra floodplain and dune sand – find a holiday apartment

Imeľ presents a striking landscape contrast within a small area: the western part lies on the wet floodplain of the Nitra, while the eastern part is situated on a low elevation with extensive wind-blown sand deposits. In places, the dunes are up to 10 metres high. The wet lowland areas and sand-dominated elevations create a varied image of the locality.

Nature

The natural area includes Veľké lúky, which extends across the cadastral territories of Imeľ and Nesvady. Remnants of its wet meadows have been preserved on the right bank of the Nitra; in some places, there are wet areas with reed growth. The European roller (Coracias garrulus) breeds in the Veľké lúky area.

The Dolné Považie Bird Protection Area also includes the cadastral territory of Imeľ. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the CHKO Dunajské luhy. The flat and wet habitats of Dolné Považie provide the western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) with a good food source. Woody vegetation, scattered trees and bushes create suitable breeding conditions for the tawny pipit (Anthus campestris), the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor), the Syrian woodpecker (Dendrocopos syriacus) and the European roller (Coracias garrulus).

The dune-sand area east of Imeľ consists of sand and woodland, which is predominantly covered by stands of acacia. The summit area of the hill in this dune-sand area is covered with well-preserved psammophilous vegetation. The Imeľ area is valuable because of the secondary diversity of its flora, vegetation cover and psammophytic plant communities.

Culture

Several buildings and memorial sites give Imeľ its historical character. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist dates from 1800. The Reformed Church in Imeľ was built in 1888. The roadside shrine Božie muky dates from 1831.

Traditional crafts are also part of the local cultural history: weaving, basketry, corn-husk processing and embroidery were widespread in Imeľ. A memorial plaque commemorating József Blaskovics recalls the linguist, Turkologist and translator József Blaskovics.
