Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist is the oldest building in Bajč. Archbishop Alexander Rudnay had it converted between 1827 and 1831 from an archbishop’s palace built in 1790. The building has a single nave and is Neoclassical; above its entrance is a pink marble commemorative plaque. The church also contains 14 Stations of the Cross created around 1960 by Víghová from Bajč.

In the settlement of Chrasť stands the manor house of the administrator of the archbishop’s estate, built by Ján Simor in the Neo-Classical style in the 1880s. It served this administrative purpose until 1945. In the park of the former manor estate in Chrasť grow a protected downy oak (Quercus pubescens) and a protected Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis). The granary built in 1837 is also located in Chrasť. Its façades are articulated by lesenes as well as string courses and cornices made of unplastered fired bricks.

Archbishop Ján Simor had the archbishop’s summer residence expanded after 1867 by adding another storey to an older building. It also had a personal chapel for the archbishop. The summer residence is a two-storey building with an L-shaped floor plan and a glazed columned veranda with a conservatory.

Archaeology

The archaeological sites of Bajč document a long settlement history. At the Ragonya site, a Lengyel grave containing a mass sacrifice and almost 100 inhumation graves from a cemetery of the Early Bronze Age Hurbanovo Group were found. An extensive Late Lengyel-period settlement was discovered next to the former brickyard near the Vlkanovo estate. The finds include pottery with furrow-stamp decoration belonging to the Bajč-Retz cultural group.

Iron objects dating from the 11th to the 13th century were found in the Vlkanovo settlement. The remains of a damaged Romanesque church from the 12th century can also be identified there. Thus, Bajč contains archaeological sites from the Lengyel period, the Early Bronze Age and the Middle Ages.

Nature

A section of the Pribetský Stream lies within the municipality of Bajč. Its banks are mainly lined with poplars and willows. This section of the stream within the municipality is known for its amphibians and waterfowl.

Local History

Bajč was one of the stations on the Komárno–Nové Zámky railway line, which opened to public traffic on 10 May 1910. The Bajč railway station building was constructed in 1910. The rectangular, two-storey building with a central avant-corps and a triangular masonry gable has been preserved almost in its original form.
