Martovce: Holiday Apartment Amid Nature, Culture and Water

Martovce combines nature, traditional culture and activities on the water. The village showcases its special features through protected areas and wetlands, a listed residential building, vibrant folklore, and routes for cyclists, walkers and visitors on the water.

Nature

Alúvium Žitavy is a protected area above the mouth of the Žitava, with willow and reed stands. Approximately 76 bird species live in this area, most of them rare species. Gémeš is a different type of landscape: the area consists of willow and poplar forests surrounded by farmland, which are frequently flooded and often remain under water throughout the summer. Gémeš also includes species-rich marshes and several bird species, including grey herons and purple herons.

Culture

The Roľnícky dom is a listed building that has housed an exhibition on rural residential culture since 1975. The traditional house was built in 1871 by István Nagy from a mixture of clay and straw, using the local wattle-building technique. It has original interior furnishings; the rooms are furnished with original painted furniture from Martovce dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can access the Roľnícky dom as part of the Museum of Hungarian Culture and the Danube Region in Komárno.

Every year, Martovce hosts the Celoštátne turičné folklórne slávnosti at the Árpád-Feszty Cultural Park. The traditional folk costume of Martovce is considered unique; there is said to be no comparable costume in the surrounding area or farther afield. A traditional custom welcoming spring brought young people together during Lent before Easter on the shore of Lake Horváth to sing and dance. The so-called candle dance is regarded as the most typical and remarkable wedding custom of Martovce. In 1898, a new Calvinist church was built under the direction of pastor Lajos Puskás.

Active Pursuits

Martovce has a nine-metre-high ropes course with several difficulty levels and various obstacles. Younger visitors can use a lower ropes park 40 centimetres above the ground. A multi-purpose sports field with artificial turf allows football, volleyball and tennis games and is illuminated for evening sports.

The Lesný náučný chodník trail runs through a picturesque forest area approximately 600 metres long around a ropes park. Families and cyclists can rest at a pergola during walks and bike rides. The trail offers play elements and ropes courses; an outdoor oven can also be used for roasting.

On the Water

Boat trips with boat rental and guided water tours are available on the Stará Nitra. The Vodný náučný chodník comprises seven stations that visitors can explore by boat. It begins at a boat landing with a covered terrace and resting area; small groups can set off in four-seat Balaton boats. During the boat trip, visitors learn about the history and equipment of local fishing and discover various fish species as well as former waterbird species from Martovce.

A 35 km cycling route described as suitable for families leads from Komárno via Lándor along the Stará Nitra to Martovce. It then crosses to the eastern bank of the Žitava and returns to Komárno via Lándor.
