Holiday apartment in Holiare – Church, village history and the Danube

Holiare combines significant archaeological finds from the time of the Avar Khaganate with an eventful local history. The Danube is also one of the town’s defining historical references and creates an unusually tangible connection between landscape, memory and village culture.

Culture

At the centre is the Calvinist church of Holiare, built between 1783 and 1786. In 1841, a tower was added to its front; at the same time, the former wooden bell tower was dismantled. Its furnishings include a pulpit and a signed table by I. Fertői from the first half of the 19th century, as well as a marble baptismal font from 1911. The building history and the preserved furnishings give the sacred building several chronological layers.

An oak planted in 1896 grows in front of the church in Holiare; a memorial column also stands there. In the Dolné Holiare district there is a Calvinist bell tower built in 1923. The traditional village heritage also includes traditional swing wells, preserved as features of folk architecture, as well as several multi-storey dovecotes made of planks.

Another place of remembrance is located in the cemetery of Holiare. There stands a war memorial for the victims of the First World War, erected around 1930. It is the work of the stonemason Viktor Komáromi from Komárno. Thus, alongside church architecture, you will also encounter memorials that are firmly connected with the town.

The local events calendar includes several different occasions. In 2014, a wine tasting took place in Holiare; a fishing competition was also held that year. Village festivals called “Falunap” took place in 2014, 2017 and 2019. Wine, fishing and the village festival each represent a distinct aspect of local life.

History

Holiare’s past has also been shaped by the recurring effects of the Danube. The river frequently destroyed the town in the past; the largest floods occurred in 1889 and 1965. These two years mark particularly significant events in the town’s history.
