Holiday apartment in Radvaň Nad Dunajom on the Danube

Radvaň nad Dunajom lies directly on the banks of the Danube. The village’s streets and houses look across the river towards the hilly Hungarian side – a landscape in which the river, settlement and hills on the opposite bank are closely interconnected.

History

Radvaň nad Dunajom is associated with a significant historical event through the so-called Žitavský mier, the Peace of Žitava: on 11 November 1606, peace was concluded in the middle of the Danube between Rudolf II and the Turkish Sultan Ahmed. The events of March 1945 are also present on the banks of the Danube. At that time, a Soviet flotilla landed on the banks of Radvaň nad Dunajom near Žitava; a monument was erected at the landing site. The village also commemorates the Hungarian poet Dávid Baróti Szabó with a kopjafa memorial.

Culture

The village district of Žitavská Tôň is home to a particular cultural and historical focus. It contains an important archaeological site that has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The finds date from the Early Bronze Age through the Hallstatt period and the Roman period to the era of the Avar Khaganate.

The churches also preserve different phases of construction. The Reformed church is an Articular church dating from the second half of the 17th century. In the first half of the 19th century, it was redesigned in the Classicist style and completely rebuilt in 1925. The Roman Catholic Church of Panny Márie is a Classicist building from 1833. It has a single-nave layout with a semicircular altar apse, a northern sacristy and a small roof turret above the gable.

Nature

The Dolné Pohronie Special Protection Area encompasses the cadastral territory of Radvaň nad Dunajom. It was established to maintain the favourable condition of the habitats of the European bee-eater, scientifically known as Merops apiaster, and to ensure its survival and breeding conditions. The landscape of the protected area includes vertical sand and loess walls with adjoining xerothermic vegetation, characterised by steppe and forest-steppe.

Getting around

The ST207 route runs along the Danube embankment from Radvaň nad Dunajom and passes through Moča. The ST207 Radvaň nad Dunajom–Mužla stage is part of the international long-distance hiking trail Sultans Trail, which runs from Vienna to Istanbul. Cyclists can also use a long-distance connection: the international EuroVelo 6 cycle route passes the Žitava Peace Monument in Radvaň nad Dunajom.

A cross-border ferry connects Radvaň nad Dunajom with Neszmély in Hungary. The crossing between the two places is 800 metres long and takes five minutes.
