Zlatná Na Ostrove is situated on the main road and railway line connecting Komárno with Bratislava. South of the village, the Danube flows by and forms the state border between Slovakia and Hungary. An important local tradition is also associated with the river: panning for gold from the Danube’s sand deposits was a livelihood for the municipality from the Middle Ages until the first half of the 20th century. The stretch of the Danube where watermills operated was called Malomrév—a name meaning “landing place of the watermills.”

Nature and bodies of water

Veľkolélsky ostrov, near the settlement of Veľký Lél, is part of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. The Danube island lies within the cadastral areas of the municipalities of Zlatná na Ostrove and Veľké Kosihy and is the last Danube island still belonging to the so-called inland delta of the Danube. Veľkolélsky ostrov features a diverse mosaic of wetland, forest and grassland habitats.

Veľkolélsky ostrov is also part of the Dunajské luhy Special Protection Area for birds. Its protection is aimed at preserving habitats for bird species of European importance. The island also belongs to the Dunajské luhy Ramsar wetland and is recognized as a wetland of international importance.

The PR Zlatniansky luh nature reserve is located on Veľkolélsky ostrov. It was designated in 1974 and covers 9.14 hectares. The protected area preserves remnants of floodplain forests with breeding sites for waterbirds along the lower reaches of the Danube.

Culture and remembrance

The history of the village includes several religious buildings and historical monuments. The church of the Reformed Christian Church was built in 1794. It contains a “Lord’s Table” dating from 1714. The classicist Kúria, built in 1769 on older foundations by Michal and Štefan Magyary-Kossovci, still stands near this church. The Roman Catholic church was built in 1935.

The parish is also connected with a chapter of European history: in 1848/49, it served as the main base of Austrian army corps, while the church tower was used as an observation post. A Holocaust memorial bearing the names of 61 victims from the municipality stands in the Jewish cemetery.

In the local cemetery, the residents of the municipality had a monument to the fallen of the First World War erected in 1928. It commemorates 80 fallen soldiers of that war. Next to this monument, another memorial was erected in 1975 in honor of the victims on the fronts of the Second World War.

Activities

Veľkolélsky ostrov can be explored in various ways. The educational trail there can be walked, traveled by boat or cycled. In addition, guided hiking excursions lasting from half a day to a full day are offered.
