Holiday apartment in Veľké Kosihy: salt meadows and Danube floodplains

Veľké Kosihy is notable for its remarkable combination of rare salt meadows near Mostové, water-shaped habitats and distinctive evidence of the village’s history.

Nature

The cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy contains salt-marsh and salt-meadow communities of European importance at the Mostové site. They are among the most endangered habitats and provide a home for many endangered plant and animal species. The Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site encompasses the cadastral area of Veľké Kosihy, as well as the main course of the Danube and the floodplain forests on its left bank.

The natural aquatic habitats of the Dunajské luhy area, including rivers and marshes, also provide suitable conditions for waterfowl breeding. The species mentioned include the little bittern, common tern, garganey and redshank. Thus, Veľké Kosihy is home both to distinctive salt-meadow communities and to water-dependent habitats with diverse wildlife.

Culture and history

The Calvinist church in Veľké Kosihy was built in 1819 in the Classical style. Its interior has wooden Protestant galleries on two sides. The church is considered well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose. Next to it, Károly Zámory had a Classical manor house built around 1830.

Another historical landmark is the old pumping station. It was built into the Danube embankment in 1856 and formed part of the drainage system of Žitný ostrov. The small, single-storey steam pumping-station building has not been operational since 1965. The church, manor house and pumping station therefore represent different periods in the village’s history and various architectural functions.

Paths and mobility

In Veľké Kosihy, a municipal project provided for the construction of a total of 264 m of footpaths. It also included a 6.5 m-long pedestrian bridge over the Lél–Kosihy Canal. As part of a modernisation project, the old bus stop in the centre of Veľké Kosihy was also replaced.

On 16 October 2021, as part of the Sports and Health Day, a multifunctional outdoor sports area covering 100 m² was officially opened in Veľké Kosihy. The “Jungle street workout” sports park opened on that occasion included, among other things, an inclined bench, vertical and horizontal ladders, a low horizontal bar, low parallel bars, inclined parallel bars and a two-part high horizontal bar.
