Komárno combines impressive fortress architecture with traces of European culture, squares, museums and places of recreation along the Váh. Culture

Pevnosť Komárno is part of the most extensive fortress system in Central Europe, which stretches across the Slovak Republic and Hungary. The oldest section, known as Stará pevnosť, was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. For safety reasons, Pevnosť Komárno can only be visited as part of a guided tour with a guide. The EuroVelo 6 cycle route also runs along the fortress.

At Nádvorie Európy, a special architectural diversity can be seen in one place: the square brings together characteristic features of architecture from 36 European countries and regions. The Podunajské múzeum presents its exhibitions and displays in three buildings in the centre of Komárno. This museum also includes a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments. It is located in Bastion No. 6 of the fortress system on the outskirts of Komárno.

History

On Námestie generála Klapku, the statue of György Klapka, a representative of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/49, dominates the appearance of the square. Another prominent monument is the Marian column of the Holy Trinity, also known by the names Súsošie Najsvätejšej Trojice and Trojičný stĺp. It dates from 1715 and commemorates the plague epidemic of 1710 to 1711 as well as the end of the Kuruc wars. Construction work on the Kostol sv. Ondreja church lasted from 1723 to 1763.

Nature

The Mŕtve rameno Váhu is located on the Váh and offers opportunities for recreation in nature. Cycling, inline skating and running routes run around the Mŕtve rameno Váhu and the Váh. Designated picnic areas are also available at the Mŕtve rameno Váhu. Thus, in addition to the buildings and museums, the water and paths along the river are also visible components of Komárno.

Water

In summer, the Termálne kúpalisko Komárno offers a 2.5-hectare site with seven different pools. The bathing complex also includes a Finnish sauna with a capacity of up to 20 people. A pool in the open air with a movable roof, which can be partially opened or closed, is available year-round. As a result, the thermal bath contains different structural and seasonal areas side by side, without their respective features needing to be confused with one another.
