Culture
Hrad Modrý Kameň consists of the ruins of a Gothic castle dating from before 1278 and a Baroque château built in 1730. Hrad Modrý Kameň can be reached by car up to the castle; on foot, the walk from Modrý Kameň takes approximately 20 minutes. As part of the tour, visitors can also visit a viewpoint from the castle ruins.
The district’s host city, Veľký Krtíš, lies on the Lučenec–Zvolen–Levice transport corridor. It has three national cultural monuments and fourteen locally listed monuments. The mining complex monument “Banícky kombajn” is also located there.

Nature
The Ipeľ River forms the southern boundary of Veľký Krtíš District and is also the border river with the Republic of Hungary. Modrokamenská lesostep is a nature reserve near the Hrad Modrý Kameň complex.
Čebovská lesostep is a 212.97-hectare Natura 2000 site in the cadastral areas of Čebovce and Horné Príbelce in Veľký Krtíš District. It was proposed for the protection of the habitat of European importance comprising Carpathian and Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests (91G0), as well as the species of European importance stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) and yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata).
Kiarovský močiar is a 78.76-hectare Natura 2000 site in Kiarov and Kováčovce in Veľký Krtíš District. It was proposed for the protection of moisture-loving tall-herb fringe communities in river floodplains, as well as the species of European importance Balkan goldenring (Ophiogomphus cecilia) and fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina).
Wine
The Vinohradnícka expozícia presents the history of viticulture in northern Novohrad through a video animation available in two language versions. Viticulture in parts of today’s Veľký Krtíš District, which belong to the historic regions of Novohrad and Hont, dates back far into the past.
MOVINO offers professionally guided wine tastings; these can be booked and combined with a tour of the winery or vineyards. The public tasting of the traditional Plachtince wine competition traditionally takes place on the last Saturday of the carnival season, the Saturday before Ash Wednesday.
Wellness

The Krttíšska magistrála is a 20-kilometre cycling route. The listed waypoints of the Krttíšska magistrála include Veľký Krtíš and Modrý Kameň.
