Malé Zlievce – Church, Chapel and Manor House

Malé Zlievce is located in the Ipeľ Basin in the valley of the Stracinský stream. The municipal area is hilly and characterised by flat ridges; its subsoil consists of young Tertiary deposits. Acacia and oak groves grow on the steeper slopes, while other areas have been deforested.

History

Malé Zlievce emerged around the 13th century through its separation from the municipality of Zlievce, which had already been documented as early as 1248. From 1554 to 1593, the village was occupied by the Turks. After wars and a plague epidemic in the first half of the 17th century, the settlement was completely abandoned and resettled around 1680.

Landscape and livelihoods

Agriculture and viticulture were part of Malé Zlievce’s historical livelihoods. Lignite was mined here from the middle of the 19th century. The combination of ridges, wooded slopes, deforested areas and traditional economic activities makes the landscape as readable as its settlement history.

Culture and faith

The Protestant church in Malé Zlievce was originally a Gothic church from the middle of the 14th century and was remodelled in the Renaissance style in the middle of the 17th century. It stands in the centre of Malé Zlievce and continues to serve its religious purpose. It is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic under number 460/0.

The Chapel of the Divine Mercy was solemnly consecrated on 5 April 2008; holy masses are held there. On 28 March 2009, 14 crosses for a Way of the Cross were blessed in Malé Zlievce. At the edge of the village stands a cross erected in 1940 and later repaired.

A burial site of the Kuštanovice culture was located in the territory of Malé Zlievce. The manor house of Count Pavol Prónay in Malé Zlievce was built by Count Pavol Prónay in 1709. It is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic under number 461/0.

Village life

A monument to the Red Army stands in a small park in the centre of Malé Zlievce next to the municipal office. From 1999 onwards, the Memoriál Mariana Borika youth mini-football tournament was held annually in Malé Zlievce.
