Holiday apartment in Malá Čalomija: Church and settlement history

Malá Čalomija is a place whose history reaches far back beyond the medieval written sources. The area of Malá Čalomija has been continuously inhabited since the Copper Age, known as the Eneolithic. The original settlement of Čalomija was first documented in writing in 1244. Malá Čalomija emerged in the first half of the 14th century, when Čalomija was divided into two parts. The first written mention of Malá Čalomija dates from 1342.

History

The long settlement history is also reflected in the archaeological traces. The area of today’s municipality of Malá Čalomija contains settlement finds from the Hallstatt period and the Roman period, as well as a Slavic inhumation cemetery from the 8th century. Thus, the same present-day municipality contains evidence from several periods, from the Hallstatt period and the Roman period through to the Early Middle Ages.

Culture and monument preservation

The Protestant church of Malá Čalomija was consecrated in 1787 and renovated in the Neoclassical style in 1884. It is a Neoclassical hall church dating from 1884 and stands on the site of a wooden church built in 1690. The church contains a Neoclassical altar with L. Kubányi’s 1896 painting “Kristus medzi deťmi” and an organ dating from 1894. The tower dates from 1800 and is topped by a distinctive Baroque-style onion dome with a lantern. In Slovakia’s Central Register of Monuments, the Protestant church is listed under number 459/0.

The Protestant rectory of Malá Čalomija, a late Neoclassical building dating from around 1850, is also part of the historic townscape. On the wall of the rectory next to the church, at house number 78, there is a plaque dedicated to Lehoczky Dániel. A black marble plaque on the rectory commemorates Lehoczky Dániel (1759–1841), who worked there as a clergyman, writer, and educator from 1789 until his death. The Zslipka-kereszt is a dark grey stone cross with a white corpus of Christ and an inscription on the pedestal.

Services are held every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the Protestant church of Malá Čalomija. Folk traditions and culture are maintained in Malá Čalomija, and folklore groups are also active there. Winegrowing is another traditional activity in Malá Čalomija.
