Holiday apartment in Veľká Čalomija – Culture, the Ipeľ and Pustý kostol

A historic site north of Veľká Čalomija lies in a small wooded area: Pustý kostol. Archaeological investigations date the church to the first half of the 13th century. It is a single-nave Romanesque church with an east-facing apse. Information boards on the main road and at the church mark the site; a restored road leads there.

Culture

In 1947, a medieval bronze aquamanile depicting an armed rider on horseback was found near Pustý kostol. The aquamanile discovered near Veľká Čalomija is now housed at the Stredoslovenské múzeum in Banská Bystrica.

Another historic site is a reinforced-concrete military bunker dating from 1937. It served to protect the former Czechoslovak border and was used as a light fortification during the Second World War. The bunker was reconstructed in 2021 and is currently open to visitors.

The local village museum opened in 2009. It is a three-room house with antique furniture, traditional costumes, photographs, pictures and tools used by earlier generations. The grounds also include a summer kitchen, a brick-built vaulted root cellar, a shaft well, a pond, a courtyard oven and a shelter. These areas are used for barbecues, entertainment or quiet relaxation.

The religious buildings also give the village various historical accents. The Church of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1911 in the Secession style. The wall painting inside has been restored; the original painting was created by Gyula Ádám in 1932. The Lutheran church was built in 1934 according to plans by a Czech architect, using Hussite architectural elements.

Various cultural events take place every year in the local amphitheatre, with a covered stage and covered audience seating. The renovated grave of the Polish soldier Andrzej Paruch is located in the municipal cemetery. Memorial plaques in Veľká Čalomija also commemorate Polish refugees from the Second World War.

Water and trails

The Ipeľ flows through Veľká Čalomija and also forms the border with Hungary. At the boat landing in Veľká Čalomija, kayaks and canoes, including the necessary equipment, can be rented by prior arrangement. The asphalt and dirt roads in the municipality are suitable for sporting activities.

Veľká Čalomija thus brings together various landscapes and activities: historic buildings, a museum with preserved objects and outdoor areas, memorial sites, cultural events, as well as roads and a boat landing. The individual facets remain clearly distinguishable.
