Slovenské Ďarmoty: Poiplie, Local Culture and Holiday Apartments

Slovenské Ďarmoty combines the Poiplie Bird Protection Area with traditional architecture and regular community life. The southern part of the cadastral area of Slovenské Ďarmoty belongs to the Poiplie Bird Protection Area. This protected area is an important regional migration corridor for waterbirds and includes a preserved floodplain of the Ipeľ River with riverside vegetation, wetlands, as well as waterlogged and irregularly flooded meadows. Part of the area lies in the cadastral area of Slovenské Ďarmoty.

Nature and Landscape

The Ďarmotská stráň protected area is also part of the natural environment. Rare protected species such as Koník stepný and Včelárik zlatý, as well as the protected plant Kaviľ Ivanov, can be found there. In the vicinity of Slovenské Ďarmoty, there are opportunities for hiking, cycling, running in nature and relaxing walks, including at Biely vrch. The landscape therefore offers different forms of movement side by side, from cycling and running to more leisurely walks. These routes and natural features extend from the immediate surroundings to the protected areas of Poiplie.

Culture and Village Character

A prominent cultural landmark is the Church of Saint Imrich, built in 1993. An avenue lined with trees leads to it and ends at an entrance gate. The church has a triangular stained-glass window that further emphasizes the upward-reaching character of the interior.

At the cultural centre, a memorial plaque commemorates the Czech writer Božena Němcová, who visited this area in 1852–1853. The traditional folk architecture of Slovenské Ďarmoty also preserves characteristic details. These include older earthen houses with arcades facing the courtyard and supported by wooden beams, as well as triangular plank gables.

The courtyards of the houses preserve separate summer kitchens, originally crosswise-arranged lattice huts and later walled sheds. Stables and grain stores built from adobe bricks have also been preserved. Historically, Slovenské Ďarmoty was shaped by viticulture: the first inhabitants bought vineyards from Hungarians and lived in them.

Community and Roads

Community Day is held in Slovenské Ďarmoty every year. International meetings of partner municipalities are also among the cultural and social events regularly held in Slovenské Ďarmoty. Road II/527 runs through the built-up area of Slovenské Ďarmoty. It connects the municipalities in the southern part of the district with Hungary.
