Holiday apartment in Dolná Strehová – manor house and thermal water
Imre Madách’s manor house combines literary history with a well-preserved building in Dolná Strehová. It was built at the end of the 18th century in the Rococo-Classicist style; its exterior and interior are well preserved. The manor house contains a literary-historical exhibition in 11 rooms about Imre Madách and his work “The Tragedy of Man”. Imre Madách’s grave is located in the park next to the manor house. The visitor facilities also include a visitor centre with a museum educator, a small stage and a conference room. Upon request at the ticket office, the Slovak National Museum can arrange step-free access to the manor house.
Culture
The Evangelical church in Dolná Strehová also visibly carries several historical layers into the present day. It was built in 1652; its defensive wall with loopholes has survived to this day in the side walls. The church contains a carved wooden Renaissance altar with seven biblical oil paintings. “Madáchova Strehová” adds a competition in poetry recitation. The Prameň folklore ensemble was founded in 1995 and strives to preserve and pass on the folklore of the Podpoľanie region, which has been influenced by Novohrad culture.
Landscape
There are thermal mineral springs in the cadastral area of Dolná Strehová. At the same time, the area is characterised by hilly terrain with flat, dissected ridges formed from Upper Tertiary, partly tuffaceous deposits. Oak and black locust groves grow on the steeper slopes. A prominent elevation on the southern boundary of the cadastral area is Strážna hora hill, which is 332 m high. It offers a good view of the Ipeľ River.
The thermal facilities form a separate focal point of the town. Aquatermal Strehová operates year-round. Kupko Strehová Aquatermal offers eight thermal-water pools. The water for these pools is supplied from three boreholes and emerges at 36 °C.
Events
The Hraný amatérsky humor festival, abbreviated to HAH, was established in 1990, still during the era of Czechoslovakia. It includes theatre, music, cabaret and stand-up performances, as well as competition screenings of amateur films. The 36th edition of the Hraný amatérsky humor festival began in Dolná Strehová. The sports calendar also has a long tradition: the tournament for the Dolná Strehová mayor’s cup reached its 49th edition, and a football tournament for the mayor’s cup is organised in summer.
