Holiday apartment in Malý Krtíš – landscape and local history

Malý Krtíš is located in the Ipeľ Basin in the valley of the Krtíš stream. A varied, deforested hilly landscape with flat ridges formed by Young Tertiary deposits stretches around the village. The location and landscape give this Slovak village a clear geographical framework.

Landscape

The centre of Malý Krtíš lies at an altitude of 175 metres above sea level. The cadastral area ranges from 162 to 281 metres. The area contains brown soils, where applicable illimerised soils, alluvial soils and floodplain soils. A named feature of the local water system is the “Mädokýš” spring, which lies directly beside the bed of the local watercourse.

History

The history of the village goes back a long way: Malý Krtíš has been documented since 1251 under the name “Curtus, alia villa Cvrtus”. Historical names include “Kyskwrthes” from 1482, “Maly Krtýš” from 1920, and the Hungarian name “Kiskürtös”. Malý Krtíš was occupied by the Turks from 1554 to 1593. At the beginning of the 17th century, the village was completely deserted. Between 1715 and 1720, Malý Krtíš was mentioned again as a settlement and soon afterwards once more developed into a municipality.

Culture

A distinctive feature of the village landscape is the village church bell tower of Malý Krtíš. It is a simple, brick-built rural structure with a square floor plan dating from 1848. The village church bell tower contains a bell from 1824. The development of the municipality can also be seen in specific figures and activities: in 1828, Malý Krtíš had 29 houses and 266 inhabitants who worked in agriculture. Sand for glass production was also extracted in the village.

During the capitalist era, Malý Krtíš had a steam mill. The old mill in Malý Krtíš, originally steam-powered, is falling into disrepair. The municipal coat of arms symbolically refers to coal and quartz-sandstone seams as well as to agriculture. Thus, the traditional symbols of the village place both natural or economically exploited deposits and agriculture side by side.

Municipality

The municipal library and the cultural centre together form the cultural hub of Malý Krtíš. For sporting activities, the village has a football pitch and a multifunctional field with artificial turf. On 31 August 2024, a performance was scheduled to take place at the municipal day, “Deň obce Malý Krtíš”.
