Modrý Kameň is home to the valuable listed Hrad Modrý Kameň complex. There, the ruins of the upper castle are structurally connected to the manor house in the adjacent lower bailey.

Culture and History

The three-winged Baroque manor house of Hrad Modrý Kameň was built in 1730 on the remains of the fortifications in the lower-bailey area.

Another historic building is the Neo-Romanesque Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Modrý Kameň. It dates from 1879. The church also contains votive objects from the 18th century.

A cultural highlight is the exhibition at the Museum of Puppetry Cultures and Toys. It gives visitors an insight into the history, development and present-day form of puppetry. The museum also houses the permanent exhibition “Hračky na Slovensku v 20. storočí”, which focuses on toys in Slovakia in the 20th century.

Nature

The Modrokamenská Calvary is ideal for a peaceful walk through nature. At the foot of the Calvary of Modrý Kameň, worshippers traditionally attend services during the Easter holidays; a Marian pilgrimage takes place there in September. The site thus combines a quiet path through the landscape with religious traditions that become visible at specific times of the year.

The Modrokamenská forest steppe protects natural thermophilous forest-steppe and woodland communities in the Krupinská planina. It lies in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Modrý Kameň, in the Veľký Krtíš District of the Banská Bystrica Region. In 1986, the area covering 12.1200 ha was designated as a protected area.

The Modrokamenská forest steppe is classified as an easy activity that is also suitable for children.

Another distinctive landscape feature of Modrý Kameň is one of the largest chestnut groves in the country.
