Holiday apartment in Veľké Straciny: Church, Castle Remains and Wetland

Veľké Straciny combines a complex local history with a predominantly rural landscape. The municipality lies in the northeastern part of the Ipeľská pahorkatina upland, in a side valley of the Stracinský potok stream. Culture

The local architectural history is centered on the Protestant church. The Baroque-Classical building dates from 1776 and was remodeled in the second half of the 19th century. The church is also considered the oldest architectural monument in the municipality. Its interior is neoclassical in style. The inventory also recorded two chalices from 1652 and 1752 in 1969. The church is in good condition and continues to be used for its intended purpose.

The history of the castle, too, is characterized by different historical phases. The former castle of the Čemický family housed extensive collections of museum objects and a library, but was destroyed in the 20th century. Only remnants of the western perimeter wall remain from the main building of Kaštieľ vo Veľkých Stracinách Castle. Gabriel Čemický had the late Renaissance castle built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The former castle complex also included a stable, a coach house and servants’ buildings, all of which have survived to this day.

The historical traces reach back even further. Archaeological finds attest to settlement in Veľké Straciny during the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Late Bronze Age. A silver Roman coin from the 1st century AD was also found here. The townscape additionally includes farmhouses from the 19th and 20th centuries. Evidence from different periods therefore stands side by side: from prehistoric settlement traces and Roman finds to sacral architecture, castle remains and traditional rural buildings.

Landscape

The location in the side valley of the Stracinský potok shapes the spatial character of Veľké Straciny. Oak, beech and black locust forests grow on the steeper slopes. East of the village lies the Močiar Veľké Lúky wetland, approximately 500 meters from Veľké Straciny. It covers around 10 hectares. Breeding birds and amphibians are found there, and the presence of the protected Eurasian otter has also been confirmed. Here, the landscape and local history can be read together through the wooded slopes, the wetland and settlement traces from several eras.

Rural Character

Veľké Straciny is known as an agriculturally oriented municipality and belonged to the historic wine-growing region around Modrý Kameň. Within this region, however, the village was never the most important center of viticulture. Remnants of vineyards and a wine cellar survive in today’s rural landscape. These traces preserve the connection with viticulture without overstating the municipality’s historical position within the wine-growing region. Together with the farmhouses and the open surroundings shaped by woodland, they create a townscape in which agriculture, the history of viticulture and nature stand closely alongside one another.
