Culture and History
The “Romulus Vuia” National Ethnographic Park in Cluj-Napoca is Romania’s first open-air museum and was founded on 1 June 1929. The collections of the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania comprise 41,542 original artefacts. Most originate from rural Transylvania and date from the 17th to the 20th century; they reflect the cultural environment of the Romanian, Hungarian, Saxon and Roma populations.
The “Bánffy Castle from Bonţida” is a representative architectural monument of Transylvanian Baroque. The park and lake behind it are suitable for picnics and recreation.
Nicula Monastery has an uninterrupted monastic history spanning several hundred years. Every year on 15 August, on the occasion of the patronal feast “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, Transylvania’s largest Orthodox pilgrimage event takes place at Nicula Monastery. Stained glass developed into a school of its own in Nicula; the monastic craft was learned by the villagers.
In Sic, the predominantly Hungarian community continues to preserve ethnographic traditions. The Sic Dance Museum displays a collection of 460 pairs of boots used for traditional dances. It is housed in restored traditional buildings; the ensemble also includes a barn built in the traditional style.
The Turda Museum of History was founded in 1943 in the former salt customs building in Turda, which also served as a temporary residence for the princes of Transylvania. The museum preserves 30,000 objects representative of all historical periods.
The Terezia Mine in Salina Turda contains an underground lake where boat trips are possible 112 metres deep inside the salt mine. Salina Turda offers modern leisure facilities as well as treatment options.
