Dej: Churches, Synagogue and Hiking Trails
Dej brings together significant churches, Jewish history and scenic destinations in its surroundings. The Reformed Church of Dej is also known as St. Stephen's Church and was built between 1450 and 1504 in the late Gothic Transylvanian style. Its tower, including the sheet-metal roof, is 72 metres high and features an octagonal spiral staircase. The church is also listed among the historic monuments.
Culture and History
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anthony of Padua has a 45-metre-high bell tower and seven Baroque altars. The present church building was constructed between 1726 and 1730 as an extension of the monastery and forms an architectural unit with it. Together, the two churches preserve different historical and architectural features within Dej.
The Dej Synagogue is connected with the Jewish community in Cluj County and is included on the county's northeastern tourist route. Its construction began in 1907; it was inaugurated in 1909 during the Passover holiday. The building can accommodate 900 worshippers. Another religious attraction is the wooden church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. It was built in Bonț in 1829–1831, moved to Dej in 1996 and is registered as a historic monument under code CJ-II-m-B-07596.
The city's connection with museums also reaches back into regional history. Archaeological excavations at the Roman fort in Cășeiu from 1926–1929 yielded materials that were added to the collection of the Muzeul Municipal Dej. As early as 1925, the town council decided, following a corresponding proposal, to lay the foundations for a municipal museum.
Landscape and Trails
The Someș Valley forms the boundary between the hilly Transylvanian Plain and the Someș Plateau. The hilly Transylvanian Plain is a predominantly agricultural region. As a result, different landscape areas meet around Dej, while the city is also connected with further mountain and hiking regions.
From Dej, visitors can reach the Vlădeasa Massif and use hiking trails there. A marked ridge trail runs through the Gilău–Muntele-Mare Massif. It is recommended for experienced hikers and well-prepared mountain bikers. The two areas mentioned therefore represent different types of trail experience: hiking trails are used in the Vlădeasa Massif, while a marked ridge trail runs through the Gilău–Muntele-Mare Massif, with an explicitly stated requirement for experience and preparation.
Leisure
The T&T Karting Transilvania circuit was built according to the standards and regulations of the International Karting Commission CIK-FIA. T&T Karting Transilvania also offers the possibility of organising sports competitions for teambuilding and corporate events. In this way, the motorsport offering complements the historic buildings, museum connections and hiking trails with a clearly defined leisure area.
