Frata: Wooden Church, Folk Dancing and Hilly Landscape

Culture and History

In Frata, the wooden church “Pogorârea Sfântului Spirit” is registered as a protected historic monument under code CJ-II-m-B-7617.

The year 1827, the year the building was constructed, is engraved on its entrance frame and at the base of the altar table. In 1847, the wooden church was painted by Sollyom Ignat.

The Museum of Traditions in Frata displays old objects donated by the municipality’s residents in a room at the local school.

The ethnographic museum at Școala Gimnazială Frata houses traditional household appliances, tools for processing wool and hemp, old traditional costumes, footwear over 100 years old, hand embroidery and textiles made on the loom.

The village museum in Soporu de Câmpie, Frata municipality, is also known as “Ograda Satului”; it opened in July 2021 as a private cultural attraction.

The memorial cross in the Valea Sângelui area, also called “În deal la Vamoș”, commemorates 40 people who were killed in Frata municipality in 1848.

Traditions and Festivals

Frata’s traditional dance group was re-established in 2000.

The students of Școala Gimnazială Frata perform in the “Frateanca” folk dance group.

In 2012, Vasile Soporan received the honorary title “Tezaur Uman Viu” (“Living Human Treasure”).

The Frata forms “Bărbunc” and “Românește în ponturi” have been part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2015 as variants of “Jocul Fecioresc”.

Frata’s traditional costume is kept alive through the sewing skills passed down through generations by craftswoman Raveca Soporan.

The “Jocul Satului” festival in Frata reached its 20th edition.

The programme of “Jocul Satului” in Frata included a parade featuring traditional costumes, carriages and riders.

The second edition of the harvest festival “Cununa Secerișului” was scheduled to take place in Soporu de Câmpie on 17 July at 9:00 a.m.

Customs and Cuisine

At a Șezătoare in Frata municipality, traditional customs were revived and fasting foods such as pancove with silvoiță, fasting cakes, cozonaci and colăcei were prepared.

“Căsuța La Mustață” is listed as a local gastronomic point at Principală 73 in Soporu de Câmpie, Frata municipality.

Landscape and Nature

Frata municipality is located in the hilly landscape of the Transylvanian Plain.

The Valea Frății valley collects the municipality of Frata’s side valleys and reaches the Mureș via the Luduș stream.

The oak tree in Berchieșu, Frata municipality, is estimated to be around 400 years old.

The fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) in Berchieșu, Frata, is a legally protected and endangered plant.

The county road DJ 150 runs through the territory of Frata municipality along the Viișoara–Frata–Mociu route.

DJ 150 connects the Mociu area on DN 16 with the Câmpia Turzii area on DN 15.
