Discover Turda: Salina, Roman Fortress and Museum

Turda combines the underground world of Salina Turda with Roman history, museum culture and relaxation at Durgău Beach. A visit to Salina Turda includes a prepared route through the Salt Museum. The Rudolf and Terezia mines also contain an underground mini amusement park as part of the complex.

History

The Roman fortress of Potaissa, the fortress of the V Macedonica Legion, stands on the Dealul Cetății plateau. It is considered Potaissa’s most important historical and archaeological monument and the largest legionary fortress in Dacia to have operated for an extended period. The archaeologically investigated remains have been consolidated and conserved. The archaeologically investigated areas can be visited on site.

Museum and Remembrance

The Turda History Museum preserves more than 40,000 cultural artefacts, divided into collections. The Roman and post-Roman collection comprises 24,526 cultural artefacts. In addition, the ethnographic collection contains approximately 750 pieces. Roman and post-Roman evidence therefore meets objects from the region’s everyday and material culture. The collections thus range from Roman and post-Roman cultural artefacts to ethnographic pieces. The painting adds to this collection a depiction from 1896 and an event from the Turda Diet.

Among the History Museum’s notable works is the oil painting “Dieta de la Turda”. The Hungarian painter Körösfői-Kriesch Aladár created it in 1896. It depicts the historic moment when religious consciousness and tolerance were declared at the Turda Diet from 6 to 13 January 1568.

Another historic place of remembrance is the grave of Michael the Brave. It lies 3 km south of the centre of Turda; his body was buried at this location. The museum, fortress, painting and grave connect different periods of the city’s and country’s history.

Nature and Recreation

Cheile Turzii is a gorge formed by the Hasdate River and has held nature reserve status since 1938. Durgău Beach offers a different focus as an alternative for wellness and recreation in Turda. The mineralised lakes at Durgău Beach formed at former salt mines and offer opportunities for recreation and relaxation in natural surroundings during the summer.
