In Nicula, in the municipality of Fizeșu Gherlii, you will find the museum collection of Nicula Monastery. It includes religious works of art, icons painted on glass and wood, and rare books; it also includes Varlaam’s Cazania, printed in 1643.
Nicula Monastery has been known since 1552 as one of the oldest monastic centers in the Romanian region. From 1659 onward, it also served as an imperial school attended by children from the surrounding villages. The glass-painting tradition of Nicula was learned by villagers and is still preserved by the monks today.
The wooden church in Nicula dates from the 17th century and was moved here from the hamlet of Năsal–Fânaţe. The monastery grounds are home to a center for painting icons on glass.

The School Museum in Fizeșu Gherlii has a cactus collection featuring numerous species from around the world and displays rare plants from the region, including lady’s-slipper orchids.

The pilgrimage to Nicula Monastery takes place every year on August 15 and is described as the largest pilgrimage in Transylvania. During the documented “La Nicula colo-n deal” pilgrimage in 2026, the route from Gherla to Nicula Monastery took approximately three hours.
At the crossroads of Gherla, Fizeșu Gherlii, and Nicula, the parish of Fizeșu Gherlii erected a wayside cross, which was consecrated by three hierarchs.
