Nature
Turbăria de la Căpățâna is a botanically significant nature reserve of national importance and has been protected since 1969. It is located on the main ridge of the Gilău-Muntele-Mare Massif at an altitude of 1,600 metres. Cheile Dumitresei is a landscape of value at county level in Cluj County.
Împărăția lui Zamolxe is a 514-hectare zoological nature reserve. The animal species found there include lynxes, wolves, roe deer, otters and capercaillies.
Heights and Trails
The village of Măguri, which is inhabited year-round and is located in Măguri-Răcătău Commune, lies at an altitude of between 1,250 and 1,400 metres. The Țâcla Gabrii rock offers views of the villages of Măguri and Mărișel.
The Măguri-Răcătău–Vârful Dumitreasa–La Potcoavă hiking trail is accessible by car as far as Șaua Dobrin. The Cluj–Someșul Rece–Măguri-Răcătău connection is part of the county transport network.
Routes
The Valea Ierii–Dobrin–Măguri-Răcătău route is suitable for four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles, quads and bicycles. It is 28 kilometres long and takes approximately one and a half hours without stops.
Culture and History
The “Căsuța Bunicii” Museum displays authentic plates, cloths, headscarves, traditional costumes, woven bags and traditional weaving tools. The museum’s objects were moved from their original, difficult-to-access location to a room in the centre of the village of Răcătău in Măguri-Răcătău Commune.
Simion Drînda from Măguri practised the blacksmith’s trade all his life and opened his own forge in 1975. In 2023, he was declared a “Living Human Treasure” by Romania’s Ministry of Culture. Badea Simion works entirely by hand in his smithy, using old tools and no electric tools.
At the cemetery of Mănăstirea Muntele Rece, 26 fallen soldiers were initially buried after the 1944 battles, including nine unknown soldiers. Iosif Bordea from Muntele Rece is described as a charcoal burner and as a holder of the title “Living Human Treasure”.
Traditions
An annual traditional gathering takes place on Muntele Dobrin in Măguri-Răcătău Commune around the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At the gathering on 29 June 2023, the programme began with a liturgy in the wooden church, followed by a folklore concert.
