Săcuieu: Sequoia Trees, Hiking Trails and Churches

Săcuieu lies on the Valea Săcuieului River. The commune of Săcuieu is located in the Vlădeasa Massif, which belongs to the area of the Apuseni Mountains National Park.

Nature and landscape

Between Săcuieu and Rogojel, the “Arborele de Sequoia” forest reserve is located on Dealul Domnului. The sequoia tree near Rogojel has a base diameter of approximately two metres; its trunk divides into two trunks that grow up to 36 metres high.

Piatra Bănișorului is a county-protected landscape area consisting of a rock formation that overlooks the village of Vișagu from an altitude of 1,175 metres. Pietrele Albe is a protected white limestone outcrop in the area of Răchițele and Săcuieu, on the left slope of the Valea Stanciului valley; there are caves, vertical walls and shafts there.

The protected Drăgan Reservoir area lies within the administrative territories of the communes of Poieni and Săcuieu, on the border with Bihor County and in the upper catchment area of the Valea Drăganului valley.

Hiking and climbing

A tourist trail included in the national trail-marking network was established to enable visitors to reach the sequoia tree near Rogojel. After passing through Săcuieu and shortly after entering Rogojel, a steep, narrow forest road leads to the sequoia tree; from there, it can be reached on foot in approximately 30 minutes.

The Săcuieu–Arborele Sequoia–Piatra Bănișorului route is marked with a yellow triangle, takes 3–4 hours and has a moderate level of difficulty. The moderately difficult, 10-kilometre hiking trail from Piatra Bănișorului via Valea Ordângușei and the sequoia trees ends in the village of Săcuieu; the positive elevation gain is 250 metres, the negative elevation change is 890 metres, the uphill walking time is 5 hours and the downhill walking time is 4 hours.

The route from Valea Odrângușa via Rogojel and Poiana Frânturilor to Cabana Vlădeasa is marked with a blue bar, takes 3–4 hours and also has a moderate level of difficulty. The Săcuieu–Vlădeasa hiking route begins in the centre of the commune of Săcuieu and is considered accessible year-round; its marking is inadequate in places.

Pietrele Albe offers opportunities for mountaineering and climbing in a limestone massif in the area of Răchițele and Săcuieu.

Culture and churches

The traditional culture of the area of the commune of Săcuieu includes old wooden houses with wooden-shingle roofs, simple interiors and handmade wooden furniture.

A wooden church dating from 1800 stands in the village of Vișagu, in the commune of Săcuieu. In Rogojel, in the commune of Săcuieu, stands the “Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” Church, a building dating from the 18th century.

The “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” Church in Săcuieu has a granite nave-shaped structure, was covered with wooden shingles, was built between 1882 and 1885, and was consecrated on 14 August 1885. The church preserves old liturgical and theological books, including a Pentecostarion printed in Cyrillic script in 1762 by the Episcopal Printing House of Blaj.
