Its “People Make Clothes” exhibition features 52 costumes spanning 1,000 years of European fashion history. Lichtenwalde Castle and Park now display exhibits from foreign cultures as well as porcelain, lacquerware, furniture and silk embroidery—a different selection in which objects of craftsmanship represent a variety of materials and design traditions.

Experience mining in a special way
Mining experiences also vary considerably. On underground tours of the “Reiche Zeche” teaching mine, the visit begins with a descent by shaft cage, usually via the “Reiche Zeche” shaft. The cage reaches the landing at a depth of around 150 metres. The descent is therefore part of the visit, not merely a way to reach a destination underground. At the “Alte Hoffnung Erbstolln” visitor mine in Schönborn-Dreiwerden, in the municipality of Rossau, you can instead travel underground by boat. For another mining experience, you can ride an original mining wagon on the historic Dreiwerden ore railway directly to the entrance of the mine.
Cycling, water and winter activities in the region
There are also several options for active days. The Mulde Cycle Route crosses the district of Central Saxony. The Porphyrland Geopark in Central Saxony invites visitors to hike and cycle. Sailing is possible at the Kriebstein Reservoir. These are different ways to spend time outdoors; they do not describe a single combined route. In the ridge area of the Ore Mountains in Central Saxony, there are excellently prepared ski slopes and cross-country trails. Winter sports are therefore also part of the region’s offerings, alongside cycling, hiking and sailing.
Recurring events include the Central Saxony Cultural Summer, a three-month summer festival featuring more than 40 events in Central Saxony. The “Historic Settlement Procession” takes place every year in the Striegis valleys.
