Döbeln combines an unusual old-town setting with distinctive cultural sites. The old town is located on a 24-hectare island between two branches of the Freiberg Mulde. St. Nicolai is home to a Late Gothic altarpiece, the Mirakelmann, and a Romantic Eule organ.

The town museum with the Kleine Galerie is located in the attic of Döbeln Town Hall. The Kleine Galerie presents changing exhibitions by Saxon artists, while the town-history exhibition of the town museum extends across three exhibition levels. Three balconies of the town hall tower offer views over Döbeln’s rooftops from a height of around 40 metres above the town. The Great Council Chamber of Döbeln Town Hall also displays the Döbeln Giant Boot. It was made in 1925 by seven master craftsmen from different guilds, requiring 750 hours of work.

The Sparkassenhaus Erich Heckel presents a cross-section of more than 60 years of Erich Heckel’s artistic work. The exhibition can currently only be visited as part of registered guided tours. The Döbeln Theatre, built in 1872, is now used by the Mittelsächsisches Theater.

Landscape

The Klosterwiesen leisure complex is an 11-hectare recreational area in Döbeln. It has 1.5 kilometres of paved paths, which are particularly popular with skaters. The complex also includes a climbing facility and a 330-metre-long mountain-bike course. The Mulde Cycle Route runs along the Klosterwiesen leisure complex.

Cycle routes associated with Döbeln include the Mulde Cycle Route, the Zschopau Cycle Route, the Elbe-Mulde Cycle Route and the Jahnatalweg. The cycle route from Döbeln to Großbothen follows the Freiberg Mulde for approximately 34 kilometres.

Experiences

The historic Döbeln horse-drawn tram travels through the town at regular intervals or by prior arrangement. In addition to the revived horse-drawn tram, the German Horse-Drawn Tram Museum is a visitor attraction. The Stadtbad outdoor swimming pool has 50-metre competition lanes.

When it opened on 23 March 2024, Karls Erlebnis-Dorf in Döbeln was presented as Saxony’s first Karls Erlebnis-Dorf. It offers a mix of entertainment, food and amusement for adults and children. Since October 2021, a Karls Manufakturen-Markt has also been located at Döbeln’s Obermarkt.

The Töpelwinkel Nature and Leisure Centre offers bookable events and overnight accommodation and features the Overhill climbing arch.

Getting Around

Döbeln can be reached from Leipzig Central Station on the RB 110 to Döbeln Central Station. A digital town tour allows visitors to view the place in advance, even before travelling there.
