Freiberg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At Freudenstein Castle, the permanent terra mineralia exhibition presents 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites. It also includes a treasure chamber beneath a Renaissance vault.

Culture

The City and Mining Museum is housed in a 500-year-old late Gothic building. It presents Freiberg's ore mining, medieval history, early modern urban and mining development, industrialisation and cultural change.

Freiberg's historic city centre is protected as a cultural heritage site and has been preserved as an intact ensemble with a medieval urban atmosphere. The Golden Gate is a late Romanesque sandstone portal with a round arch, created around 1230.

The Silbermann House features a modern organ exhibition and a historic demonstration workshop. The exhibition also includes a playable organ model based on a design by Silbermann.

The Alte Elisabeth mine complex has largely been preserved as it was left by the last miners in 1913 and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region.

History

A recommended city route leads on foot through the centre of Freiberg, revealing tall gabled roofs and stone portals featuring mining motifs. Obermarkt was laid out between 1210 and 1217.

The Donat Tower is a 35-metre-high tower in Freiberg's city wall. It was built in the 15th century to protect the Donat Gate.

Getting Around

The Silver Trail is an approximately three-kilometre circular route with eleven oversized silver figures that connect points of interest in Freiberg's medieval old town. The route can be explored interactively via an app featuring videos, information and quizzes.

The Explorers' Trail is an interactive route connecting the City and Mining Museum with the Reiche Zeche silver mine.

Nature

Four long-distance cycle routes cross Freiberg: the Mittelland Route D4, the Saxon Cities Route, the Mulde Valley Cycle Route and the cycle path along the Silver Road. Since 2019, Freiberg has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Erzgebirge/Krusnohori Mining Region.

Hiking and cycling tours in Freiberg's mining region follow preserved traces of mining and the scenic landscape along the Freiberger Mulde.

Cuisine

Freiberger Eierschecke is traditionally baked only a few millimetres high and without quark. Visitors can try it at local bakeries, confectioneries and cafés.
