Weißenborn/Erzgeb. is located at the foot of the Ore Mountains near Freiberg. The first documented mention of the village dates back to 1213. Until the mid-19th century, silver, copper, tin and lead were mined in the northern area of Weißenborn.
History
This mining history can be seen along the mining educational trail. It passes around six wooden information boards about the history and mining in Weißenborn, as well as the former mine building of the Himmelsfürst mine, including the Günther Erbstolln adit. It is also possible to take a detour to the collapsed upper entrance of the 900-metre-long Wernergrabenrösche drainage tunnel.
Nature and trails
The mining educational trail can be extended by a trip to the Wernergraben to approximately 9.2 kilometres. It is signposted in both directions for walkers; it can be started at the Dreiländereck, at the intersection of Friedrichweg and Buchenweg. Alongside the mining remains, the trail offers views of the Ore Mountains landscape.
Weißenborn and Berthelsdorf/Erzgebirge are named as starting points for cycling and hiking tours. The signposted cycling and hiking trails around both villages lead through natural landscapes with viewpoints. The valleys of the Freiberger Mulde and the Bobritzsch cut up to 100 metres deep into the local landscape.
The lower section of the mining educational trail may be wet in spring or after heavy rainfall. Suitable footwear is recommended.
Leisure
Weißenborn's outdoor swimming pool has a water area of 3,600 m², a large water slide, a 2.50-metre diving tower, play and climbing facilities, and a beach volleyball court. Free parking spaces are also available. The pool is accessible without barriers via a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a lift.
