Culture and history
The family-oriented exhibition "The Court of the Young Rulers – Mildenstein Castle as an Electoral Children’s Nursery" is part of the castle’s offerings, as are family days. The guided tour for visitors includes medieval halls, black kitchens, cellars and large attic spaces.
Buch Monastery was founded by Cistercian monks in 1192, contains Romanesque architectural elements and is situated in the Mulde landscape. Historical guided tours focus on the monks’ lives and work. The Saxon State Office for the Preservation of Monuments considers Buch Monastery one of the most significant medieval buildings in Saxon history. Younger visitors can use a scriptorium, where they can write like monks, as well as take part in paper-making and paper-design activities and herbal tours with tea. The town church of St. Matthew is a Late Gothic hall church built between 1460 and 1484. The nave features a star vault, while the chancel has a net vault. The historic Stadtgut building houses an exhibition about the Leisnig Box Ordinance and church music.
The Leisnig Giant Boot was made in 1996 by two master shoemakers from Leisnig. The Boot Museum presents archaeological investigations of a former gate complex of Mildenstein Castle. The Boot Museum accepts advance bookings for visits and guided tours.
Townscape
Leisnig’s old town is characterised by narrow lanes, steep winding streets, retaining walls, steps and Heisten. Historical information boards on Kirchstraße, at the market and on Kirchplatz describe places in the old town.
Landscape and paths
Leisnig provides access to hiking and cycling trails through the Mulde valley, including the Mill Hiking Trail, the Saxon Luther Trail and the Mulde Cycle Path. The Freiberg Mulde is also used for guided or individual paddling tours.
Leisnig can be reached by car via the Leisnig exit of the A14 and via federal roads 107, 169 and 175. Rail services are provided by RB 110 on the Borsdorf–Coswig route; the town is also located directly on the Mulde Cycle Path.
