Experience Prüm actively
The city rally in Prüm is a self-guided activity. It starts and finishes at the Tourist Information office at Hahnplatz 1. This fixed starting and finishing point gives your exploration a clear framework; the rally can be planned as a separate activity alongside hikes and cultural visits.
The Wolfsschlucht winter sports area is located right by Prüm. Activities include downhill runs, a drag lift and tobogganing; there are also signposted, groomed cross-country ski trails. Whether winter sports are available there depends on seasonal conditions. Check these before planning an outing rather than assuming the facilities will be operating during your visit.
Events also shape the year. The GLS, organised by the town of Prüm, has attracted more than 20,000 visitors every two years since 1967. The horse market is held on a Saturday in early April and early October at the exhibition grounds. Prüm’s farmers’ market takes place on the third Sunday in October in and around the Konvikt, House of Culture. Checking the current calendar will help you confirm the dates before planning your trip. Hikes, sculptures and green trails
Panorama Hiking Trail 120 is a challenging circular hike around Prüm. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the town, the Basilica of St. Salvator and the surrounding countryside. The route combines exercise with different views of the town and its surroundings; its classification as a challenging hike is an important factor when planning.
Kruft Sculpture Park in Prüm-Niederprüm offers a different focus. A walk takes you past life-size herons, giant metal insects and numerous ponds among meadows and trees. While the panorama trail focuses on views of the town, basilica and landscape, here you’ll encounter works of art in a green setting.
Prüm Spa Park is on the edge of town and has walking paths, flower beds and places to sit. It offers another way to spend time outdoors, alongside the challenging circular hike. The park’s paths and open spaces provide a different experience from the panoramic trail’s viewpoints or the sculptures among meadows and trees.
Abbey and basilica: Prüm’s history on site
Prüm Benedictine Abbey was founded in 721. In 1748, its building was expanded into a Baroque palace based on plans by Balthasar Neumann. During the summer holidays, it hosts the art exhibition of the European Association of Visual Artists (EVBK). The building’s history and the seasonal exhibition offer different cultural points of interest.
The Basilica of St. Salvator also preserves notable features of its interior. These include the Baroque high altar, the reliquary and the tomb of Emperor Lothair, Charlemagne’s grandson. The high altar, reliquary and tomb bring religious art together with the memory of a historical figure. These features are inside the basilica; this does not mean that the reliquary is regularly on view.
