Church and Historic Village Centre

The Catholic branch church of St. James in Hersdorf-Niederhersdorf has a three-bay Late Gothic nave and a choir that bends at an angle. These features offer a concrete introduction to local architectural history. The historic preservation area in the village centre includes the church and churchyard, as well as the former manor farm of the local nobility immediately to the south. Grassland and orchards on both sides of the Altburger Bach, along with other farms opposite, are also part of it. The historic village centre therefore encompasses more than individual buildings: the churchyard, manor complex and open spaces all form part of the same historic preservation area.

The former manor farm at Altburgstraße 26 is worth a closer look. Its residential building has a stair tower and a core that is probably still medieval. This cautious classification is important: the core’s medieval origins are considered likely, but not certain. Together with the church and the other parts of the historic preservation area, the property offers a different perspective on the village’s history than the religious building alone.

Nature Trail and Marian Grotto in Hexler
