Culture and history

The Casa Museo Lodovico Pogliaghi preserves the artist’s studio and a unique collection. One of its highlights is the preparatory plaster model for the central portal of Milan Cathedral. Volandia is housed in the historic Caproni aviation workshops dating from 1910 and is dedicated, among other things, to the aviation history of the Province of Varese. The museum presents the history of aviation in seven sections along an exhibition route of more than two kilometres. The offering is complemented by a planetarium, realistic flight simulators, and covered and uncovered play areas.

Villa Della Porta Bozzolo was built in the 16th century as a country house and was later transformed into a stately villa with an Italian garden. Its rooms are richly decorated with 18th-century frescoes. The trompe-l’œil painting creates a visual connection between the interior of the villa and the garden. The Museo Baroffio offers educational activities, themed tours and guided visits, including visits to the sanctuary.

Trails and visitor access

The Sentiero del Giubileo runs through the Province of Varese and the Parco del Campo dei Fiori to Varese. To visit Santa Maria del Monte, city bus route C reaches both the beginning of the Via Sacra and the village of Santa Maria del Monte, and provides a connection to the funicular railway. The Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso can be reached via a panoramic staircase with 268 steps, from the lake via approximately 80 steps, or by lift from the car park.

The villa and park of Villa Panza are accessible to people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. Villa e Collezione Panza is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday. Isolino Virginia can be reached by boat from Biandronno. These different forms of access range from a connection by public bus and access by boat to several options at the Eremo.

Nature and water

Lake Varese shapes the landscape as a shallow, densely vegetated lake formed during the Ice Age and surrounded by a natural setting. Parco Zanzi and Lido della Schiranna are open at all times and freely accessible. The area around the lake therefore focuses both on the natural lakeshore landscape and on freely accessible areas; Lake Varese is also accompanied by the trails and natural areas of its regional surroundings.

The Chiostro di Voltorre, a museum, is also located in the vicinity of Varese.
