Historic centre with alleyways, frescoes and churches

The historic centre features narrow alleyways, Romanesque bridges, old portals made of hewn stone and several votive frescoes. Via Mazzini is home to the former monastery of the Humiliates, Ex-Convento degli Umiliati, dating from the 14th century. In Via San Pietro in Cantevria is the Madonna del Latte fresco, probably painted at the beginning of the 15th century. The Chiesa dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano has a Latin-cross floor plan, side chapels and a semicircular apse.

The Rancina stream runs through the historic centre. In total, five bridges in Rancio Valcuvia connect the two banks of the stream, including a Romanesque bridge. Another natural attraction is the Cascata del Ronco, a small waterfall in Rancio Valcuvia within Parco del Campo dei Fiori. It consists of two small cascades; the first emerges from a cave. From the car park near the A-27 company, follow the signs to Sentiero 319. After 100 metres, you will reach the turn-off for the waterfall.

Trails to the nature reserve and the history of the valley

Sentiero 19/319 begins near the medieval centre of Rancio, at the picnic area equipped by Parco Campo dei Fiori at the intersection of Strada Provinciale No. 62 and Via Valganna. Sentiero 18/318 begins in Rancio Valcuvia and leads to Torbiera del Paù Majur, also known as Palude Maggiore, one of the nature reserves of Parco Campo dei Fiori. The two trails offer different focuses for planning your day.

Sass Merèe is an old paved path that the municipality of Rancio Valcuvia has recently restored. Until the end of the 19th century, it was the only transport link to the upper valley. This path therefore tells not only of travel in the past, but also adds a historical perspective to today’s exploration of nature and the local area.

Memorial site in the town hall

The cellar of Rancio Valcuvia town hall is a Luogo della Memoria, a memorial site commemorating the events that took place in the town in November 1943. During these events, the cellar served as an interrogation and torture room. The site adds a sombre note to the varied impressions of Rancio Valcuvia.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Rancio Valcuvia, you can focus on the medieval townscape, religious art, historic paths or nature experiences. The short explorations around the alleyways, bridges and frescoes complement trails to the waterfall and nature reserve. This allows you to plan your stay according to your interests—cultural, active or deliberately varied.
