Lago Delio lies between Monte Borgna (1157 m) and Monte Cadrigna (1300 m) and is a small lake of glacial origin. From Maccagno, it can also be reached via a road suitable for vehicles, leading through Campagnano and Musignano. From the centre of Tronzano, you can climb up to Lago Delio. This makes the lake and mountain landscape among the defining destinations for days when you want to explore the surroundings on foot or using the available access routes.
Hiking trails with different starting points
The wooded area around Tronzano is suitable for trekking. A circular trail leads to Ronco Scigolino and returns to the centre of Tronzano via Poggio; the route is accessible to everyone. On the “Lago Maggiore e ritorno” circular trail, the return route follows an old, carefully paved mule track through forests and meadows. The “Al Lago Delio dalla Mora” trail begins in front of the Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Bassano, initially follows a paved mule track, changes to a path after about three kilometres and climbs up to Lago Delio.
Churches, viewpoints and archaeological traces
A convenient, level and shaded forest road leads from Bassano to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The churchyard lies on a promontory and offers views across Lake Maggiore towards the Canton of Ticino and the Brissago Islands. On the route from Bassano via the Chiesetta della Mora to Lago Delio, a prehistoric sanctuary lies in the village of Crocetta. It includes an anthropomorphic cross carved into a rocky outcrop and other archaeological finds.
Local history in visible details
The route offers expansive views of Lake Maggiore, the Castelli di Cannero, Cannobio and its valley, as well as Monte Limidario (2187 m) farther north. Visible “pile dell'orzo” have been preserved in the village; these worked stone blocks were used for husking barley. The present parish church of Tronzano was originally a small oratory, possibly built on the occasion of a plague outbreak. From 1540 until the middle of the 17th century, the Disciplinati worked in the village as masons and were probably the builders of the oratory.
Museum and music as further discoveries
The Museo Etnografico Sartorio-Banfi is located in Tronzano Lago Maggiore. A visit is possible by prior appointment; appointments can be arranged by email at museoezio@gmail.com. Every year on 15 August, a concert takes place as part of the “Antichi organi, patrimonio d’Europa” series. When choosing your accommodation, you can match these specific starting points with your preferred daily itinerary: trails from the town centre, tours via Bassano, the ascent to Lago Delio or culture directly in Tronzano.
