Forests and Lake Comabbio

The Monte San Giacomo Nature Reserve and nearby Monte Vigano are completely covered by well-preserved forests of Scots pine and chestnut trees. Numerous paths cross the Monte San Giacomo Nature Reserve and connect San Giacomo with the Bosco delle Capre in Vergiate. Those planning walks and hikes should turn their attention to this forest landscape.

Lake Comabbio is a glacial lake with an area of 4 km². A ban on motorboats contributes to the lake’s rich flora and fauna. The Pista ciclopedonale del Lago di Comabbio cycle and footpath leads around the lake through forests and reed beds. When planning your day, you can take in water, forest, and reeds as different landscape impressions.

Paths, rowing, and nature experiences

Rowing is a recreational activity on Lake Comabbio. On the shore of Corgeno on Lake Comabbio, there is a rowing center with a competition course used nationally and internationally. The hike on Monte San Giacomo leads back to the Ornitological Trail. Here, forest paths, landscapes, and rowing on the lake come together.

Churches, frescoes, and murals

The Chiesa di San Giorgio in Corgeno preserves a Romanesque bell tower built by the Maestri Comacini. The Chiesa di San Martino Cimbro preserves an 18th-century porch. In the historic center of Vergiate stands the single-nave Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the 14th century. The Chiesa di Sant’Eusebio in Sesona was built in the 14th century; its interior contains several frescoes by Appiani.

The Chiesa di San Gallo with its medieval frescoes, as well as the two murals, provide further cultural highlights: the Murale di Cimbro depicts Paul Cézanne’s work “The Card Players,” while the Murale di Vergiate depicts Claude Monet’s work “Woman with a Parasol.” The Atelier Mario da Corgeno is connected with the open-air museum Giardino dell’Anima di Mario, located along the cycle path on Lake Comabbio between kilometers 8 and 9.
