A stage of the Via Francisca del Lucomagno
The fourth stage of the Via Francisca del Lucomagno passes through Fagnano Olona. Its route runs from Castiglione Olona via the Monastero di Torba, the Monastero di Cairate, Fagnano Olona and Castellanza to Busto Arsizio.
Churches, frescoes and oratories
In Bergoro stands the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, which already existed in the 15th century. The first descriptions of its architectural structure date from 1566. The apse contains an 18 m² fresco of the Crucifixion, created by Sergio Michilini in 1983. The bronze doors also tell the story of the life of Saint John the Baptist, adding another art-related accent to this church building.
The historic sacred buildings also include the Oratorio di Sant’Anna on Via Verdi. Dionigi Maria Ferrari erected the building in 1762. In the Santuario della Madonna della Selva, the presbytery contains frescoes created by Domenico Pellegrino at the beginning of the 17th century. The Oratorio dell’Immacolata, dating from 1752, is located in the extensive Castellazzo complex.
Another connection between local tradition and history is conveyed by the legend of Manigunda. According to local tradition, the Lombard noblewoman was healed by the water of the Fonte di Manigunda and subsequently founded the Cairate monastery in 737. You encounter this story as a distinctive historical motif of the surrounding area.
Wetlands, mills and trails along the Medio Olona
The Anello Mulino Bosetti circular route passes a wetland with a bird-watching station located beside the cycle and walking path. The route therefore appeals both to nature enthusiasts and to travellers who enjoy shaping their days around a stretch of trail and close observation of the surroundings.
At the Mulino del Sasso, the original waterwheel has been preserved in its millrace. The Mulino Bosetti is one of the few mills that retain their original features. Some sections of the paths in Parco del Medio Olona run alongside the former Ferrovia della Valmorea. The historic status of this railway line remains part of the landscape impression, without requiring any present-day function to be inferred from it.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Fagnano Olona, you can therefore decide whether sacred art, traditions, milling history, or paths through wetlands and the park should form the desired focus. The various themes also allow for trip planning in which cultural discoveries and nature observations are given different levels of emphasis.
