Monteggia between Lakes and Routes

The “Travedona Biandronno Bregano” route leads from Travedona via Monteggia onwards to Biandronno and Bregano. “Il giro dei cinque laghi” leads from Biandronno in the direction of Cascina Monteggia and Travedona, continuing to Lago di Monate. Monteggia therefore appears in two different route itineraries: one connection continues to Biandronno and Bregano, while the other leads from Biandronno towards Cascina Monteggia and Travedona, with Lago di Monate as its onward destination. Lago di Monate can therefore serve as a distinct focal point alongside the connections between the localities.

Water at Lago di Monate

Lago di Monate is entirely suitable for swimming. Boats and pedal boats are often rented at public and private beaches on Lago di Monate. Sport fishing for pike and largemouth bass is also possible on Lago di Monate. The lake theme therefore offers various options for planning your day: You can plan a day of swimming, experience the lake from the water or devote yourself to fishing. Those planning a day at the lake can choose between staying on the shore, taking a boat trip and sport fishing.

Cycling Routes with Different Landscapes

From Travedona-Biandronno station, access to the cycle path at Lago di Varese leads via Via Monteggia in the direction of Biandronno; the cycle path is then reached on Via Isola Virginia. In the area around Travedona-Monate, the “Tour dei due laghi” route connects Lago di Monate with Lago Maggiore. It leads through the hilly inland area and across cultivated fields, including the peach fields of Monate. Between the two lakes, there is therefore also a section with cultivated land.

Prehistoric Traces at Lago di Monate

Within the municipality of Travedona-Monate, the prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements of Sabbione, Pozzolo and Occhio yielded tools, other objects and dugout canoes dating from around 2500 BC. The prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement of Stazione dell’Occhio is located in the Travedona-Monate area beside the present-day Lido di Monate, 30 metres from the shore and at a depth of 2 to 5 metres. For those interested in culture, this topic offers a glimpse into the landscape’s long history. Tools, other objects and dugout canoes make up the range of finds dating from around 2500 BC.

Pesche di Monate and Local Tradition

In dialect, Pesche di Monate are called “Perzic de Munà”; their preservation tradition dates back to the 1920s. Luigi Colombo, chef at Villa Motta in Travedona-Monate, developed a method for this purpose. Pesche di Monate are also among Italy’s traditional agricultural and food products. The speciality combines the dialect name with a specific place in Travedona-Monate.
