Holiday apartment in Vizzola Ticino – Nature, Routes and History
Accommodation in Vizzola Ticino
Holiday apartment in Vizzola Ticino amid nature and trails
Vizzola Ticino combines riverside landscapes, trails and history. Castelnovate is a hamlet of Vizzola Ticino; this section lies within the Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino. The Ansa di Castelnovate is the largest meander of the Ticino River and has a characteristic S-shape. The official Ansa di Castelnovate circular trail starts and ends at the hydroelectric power station in Vizzola Ticino.
Routes with different profiles
The Castelnovate section is also designated as a Site of Community Importance. The Ansa di Castelnovate circular trail is easy to walk and cycle and is 7.06 km long. The 7.06 kilometres give the circular trail a clearly defined profile; the Chiesa di San Giulio, castle remains and industrial history provide a different focus. The S6 trail includes unpaved and cobblestone sections as well as some uphill stretches and is unsuitable for people with disabilities along almost its entire length. The S6 trail therefore has a different character from the easy Ansa loop.
A particular historical trace is the Ipposidra. It was an animal-drawn railway that transported boats overland for transport between Tornavento and Sesto Calende along the Ticino and operated from 1858 to 1865. Its remains can be followed along a partially preserved unpaved path through the vegetation. The Ipposidra route starts and ends at the town hall of Vizzola Ticino.
Church, Castle and Local History
The Chiesa di San Giulio also provides access to the area’s history. The parish of San Giulio in Vizzola Ticino was founded between 1609 and 1611. The church is a small rectangular building with a single-nave layout, two side chapels and a square chancel. Its Baroque altar bears an 18th-century painting that some attribute to Carlo Marino of Oleggio. Castelnovate is also home to the remains of an early medieval castle with a square ground plan.
The Vizzola hydroelectric power station was inaugurated on 9 October 1901 in the presence of the Italian royal family; the present structure was created after extensive redevelopment in 1937. The Villa e industrie Caproni complex was built in 1920 with an E-shaped ground plan. The former aviation workshops dating from 1915 now house the Museo del volo Volandia. The Vizzola hydroelectric power station is one of the points of interest along the Ciclabile del Parco lombardo del Ticino.
