Landscapes and trails in the district

Almost five-sixths of the Neuwied district is designated as the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. The Wied and other rivers that flow into the Rhine divide the Westerwald plateau there. This creates a different landscape setting from the museums and historic buildings in the town. A prominent landmark in the district is the viewing platform on the former water tower in Kurtscheid: at 413 metres, it is the highest viewpoint in the Neuwied district.

The district also offers a longer route for cyclists: around 40 kilometres of the Rhine Cycle Route run through it. The section in the district is described as easy and is easily accessible by train and bus. This information refers to the section of the Rhine Cycle Route in the district. In the town of Neuwied, the Deichstadtweg also runs along the banks of the Rhine. The cycle route is more than 17 kilometres long and has 24 stops. When deciding which routes suit your trip, you can distinguish between a trail in the town and the longer section of the Rhine Cycle Route in the district.

Culture, history and special collections

The Roentgen Museum Neuwied holds a unique collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks, unmatched anywhere in the world. The combination of these two collections makes a visit to the museum a cultural attraction in its own right. Another historic landmark is the church in Neuwied-Feldkirchen, which is more than 800 years old.

The UNESCO World Heritage Limes, with its watchtowers and forts, runs through the entire town of Neuwied. The NR1 is called the “Historic Roman and Celtic Trail” and is a hiking trail in Neuwied. Roman history and hiking trails can thus be encountered in different forms: as part of the Limes in the town and as a named hiking route. Rommersdorf Abbey in Neuwied-Heimbach-Weis adds another historic site, with a building history that includes specific dates. It was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1117 and taken over by the Premonstratensians in 1135. Medieval architectural elements have been preserved, marking the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style.

Other museums offer different points of interest: Schloss Engers houses a palace museum; Schloß Monrepos is a museum of Ice Age archaeology. Schloss Engers also hosts festivals, concerts and other events. Exceptional markets take place in Neuwied throughout the year. The cultural offering therefore includes collections and historic buildings, as well as events and markets.

Hikes and activities with children

Alongside the NR1, visitors who want to explore Neuwied on foot can also follow the Fürstenweg. It is a certified Rheinsteig circular tour and a premium hiking trail in the town of Neuwied. The Deichstadtweg, meanwhile, is a cycle route along the banks of the Rhine. The routes differ in their described form: one is a circular tour and hiking trail, while the other is a cycling route more than 17 kilometres long, with 24 stops.

Families with children can choose from several different activities. Zoo Neuwied is currently home to around 1,800 animals from more than 185 species. The zoo includes SWeNis Kinderland, with a large playground and a petting enclosure. Deichwelle Neuwied also has an indoor water playground called Abenteuerinsel. Activities mentioned there include climbing, sliding, splashing, paddling and playing. These attractions differ considerably: the zoo is home to animals from many species, while Kinderland and Abenteuerinsel offer play and water activities.

The attractions mentioned are not all in the same area: some are in Neuwied, while others are in the district. Keep this distinction in mind when planning if you are looking for a holiday apartment as a base for exploring both the town and the district.
