Rengsdorf: Trails, Water and History

Historic traces in the town

The 12-kilometre historic Butter Path runs between Hümmerich and Rengsdorf; Rengsdorf can be either its starting point or destination. The present-day Protestant church also brings together different periods of construction: it was built in 1904/1905, while its tower dates from the 12th century.

The historic Linden Avenue has a very old stand of trees and ends at an Art Nouveau pavilion that invites you to linger. At the entrance to the town from the direction of Neuwied, the Bismarck Column stands in a small park with mature trees. From there, you can enjoy a view over the Neuwied Basin. These places let you experience history and landscape in different ways: along an avenue, at a historic monument or while looking out across the basin.

Hiking trails with different characters

You can hike or walk in the Roman Ditch; several top hiking trails pass through it. The certified Monastery Trail begins or ends right in Rengsdorf. It is not a circular route; the recommended hike is from Rengsdorf to Waldbreitbach. If you plan to take this trail, be sure to note the recommended direction. The Roman Ditch, by contrast, is ideal for hiking and walking.

The Dwarf Trails lie around Rengsdorf. They are suitable for children of kindergarten and primary-school age, as well as families with toddlers. This lets you tailor your choice to the day’s planned hike: the Monastery Trail has a recommended direction, the Roman Ditch serves as a hiking and walking trail, and the Dwarf Trails are explicitly aimed at a particular age group.

Water activities and an herb garden

Rengsdorf outdoor pool offers a non-swimmer leisure pool with water cannons, wide spray jets, massage jets, floor bubblers and a wide-wave slide, as well as a large pool with 50-metre lanes. The two pools have different focuses: one offers the water features and play elements listed above, while the other has swimming lanes.

At the start of the Rengsdorf Apple Trail, the FloFa Rengsdorf e.V. association runs the children’s herb garden as a meeting place for children and adults. If you plan to visit, check in advance what activities are currently available. Together with the trails and the outdoor pool, this gives you a choice of different activities without limiting your stay to just one kind of day out.
