Roßbach invites you to discover the landscape one step at a time: hiking trails lead up to the heights, along the Wied and through several valleys; the Westerwald Trail and Wied Trail cross in the village. There is also the 11.7-kilometre Basalt Arch adventure loop, which returns to its starting point. This combination gives you a concrete starting point when planning a hiking break and choosing a holiday apartment to suit your preferred style of tour.

Hiking around Roßbach

The Basalt Arch adventure loop returns to its starting point in Roßbach. The route starts at the car park by Wiedhalle on Auf dem Posten street. Following natural trails, the loop runs along the Wied stream and through the Masbach Valley. It is marked with the trail markers of the Westerwald Trail and Wied Trail; it does not have its own continuous markings.

For other hiking plans, trails from Roßbach lead up to the heights, along the Wied, and through the Elsbach Valley, Membach Valley, Masbach Valley and Wallbach Valley. The village is also a clear point of reference for a stage hike: the sixth stage of the Wied Trail ends in Roßbach/Wied. This means you can choose between two different ways of hiking: a circular route that returns to its starting point and a stage that ends in the village.

The Wied, a volcanic hill and the history of basalt

Roßbach is located in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. Nearby is the Roßbach Häubchen, a distinctive volcanic hill above the widening of the valley near Roßbach. A nature trail on the hill explains basalt quarrying from 1883 to 1942. Alongside the hiking trails and valley landscapes, the shape of the volcanic hill and the history of quarrying offer further topics to explore.

St. Michael’s Church in Roßbach adds a cultural point of interest to the landscape and hiking themes: regular Masses have been held there since 1802. This date provides a specific point of reference in the village’s history alongside its natural attractions and hiking trails.

Choose a holiday apartment for after your day’s hike

The Basalt Arch offers the first point of reference, while the Wied Trail offers the second.
