Isenburg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Isenburg is a municipality in the Neuwied district of Rhineland-Palatinate and is located in the Sayn Valley between Bendorf on the Rhine and Dierdorf in the Westerwald. The ruins of Isenburg Castle are the municipality’s landmark and stand in the center of the village. Culture

The remains of the medieval fortifications include the Alte Porz and Schildpforte gates, as well as parts of the surrounding wall. Alte Porz is a 14th-century gate from Isenburg’s former fortifications. Isenburg Castle was probably built around 1100 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Isenburg. As a Romanesque hilltop castle, it is the second-oldest castle in the Neuwied district. The Church of St. Catherine combines a Gothic choir from the 14th century with a neo-Gothic nave built in 1862. The church contains historic bells from the 12th or 13th century and from the 15th century, as well as a Romanesque capital from Isenburg Castle.

The 20.8-kilometer Iserbachschleife is a certified premium trail with panoramic views, stream valleys, meadows, beech forests, and historic structures. The trail descends into the Saynbach Valley to Isenburg and offers detours to Isenburg Castle and the Church of St. Catherine. The Iserbachschleife is described as being particularly well connected to public transportation.

Isenburg is served by SWBV bus route 117 on the Neuwied–Maischeid–Dierdorf–Wienau route. The visitor path to the castle runs over the castle hill; the historic castle path from the parking lot at the church is privately owned. The footpath to the castle is best accessed via Große Luft, with parking available at Auf dem Nippes in front of the old school and the Church of St. Catherine.
