Neuwied: Furniture Art, Levee and Rhine
Accommodation in Neuwied
Neuwied combines exceptional furniture art and historic cultural sites with opportunities for hiking and cycling along the Rhine and in the first foothills of the Westerwald. Families, too, will find a range of discoveries, from the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate to experience stations along the levee. When choosing a holiday apartment in Neuwied, it is worth first considering whether culture, trips into nature or activities for children will shape your stay.

Furniture Art with a European History
The Roentgen Museum Neuwied has a unique collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks found nowhere else in the world. Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David Roentgen (1743–1807) provide a special historical context: the two most important furniture makers of the 18th century supplied European princely courts from Paris to St. Petersburg with their highly modern luxury furniture, known as “Neuwied furniture.” Anyone interested in craftsmanship and history will find a tangible connection here to an era when furniture from Neuwied was in demand at courts across Europe.
Another cultural venue in the city center is the STADTGALERIE Mennonitenkirche. It is located right by the levee in the former rooms of a Mennonite church built in 1768. Neuwied Castle is also home to the regionally renowned Schlosstheater: it is located in an annex and hosts regular performances by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Theatre. The gallery and theater offer different reasons to include art and culture in your travel plans.
Rommersdorf Abbey: History, Architecture and Performances
Rommersdorf Abbey is a former Premonstratensian abbey that has shaped the region around Neuwied for centuries. As a cultural monument, it is of particular interest to history enthusiasts, garden lovers and architecture buffs. Today, it is also a venue for theater, concerts and readings. These events make use of, among other places, the English Garden, the cloister and the abbey church.
Visits are possible during a specific period each year: from Easter until early November, the abbey can be visited on Sundays between 1 and 6 p.m. Information on its history and art history, as well as guided tours led by knowledgeable Rommersdorf experts, is available free of charge. If you are planning a visit, you can take into account the difference between a Sunday visit and attending a performance, rather than treating them as the same experience.
Levee, Nature and Family Activities
Neuwied’s levee is a landmark of the city. At the levee information center and 22 experience stations, the levee and Neuwied’s many distinctive features are presented to residents and visitors. Those interested in the city and what makes it unique can explore these topics at several stations.
For outdoor activities, the natural areas along the Rhine and the first foothills of the Westerwald near Neuwied are well suited to hiking and cycling. Part of the Limes Cycle Route also passes through the city. These offer different ways to plan an active day: you can focus on a route along the river or in the hills, or choose the Limes Cycle Route as the theme of your bike tour.
Neuwied Zoo is the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its offerings include children’s birthday parties, evening tours, animal photography workshops and programs for school classes. Alongside a zoo visit, there are also a range of formats for groups and shared discoveries. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you are looking for, for example, a guided tour, a photography workshop or an activity for a school class.
MONREPOS in Neuwied is an archaeological research center and museum dedicated to human behavioral evolution. If you plan to visit, keep the final part of the journey in mind when traveling by public transport: MONREPOS cannot be reached directly by public transport. The nearest bus stop is “Waldesruh” in the Segendorf district; from there, MONREPOS is still several kilometers away on foot.
For further information about sights, museums and exhibitions, the Neuwied Tourist Information Office advises visitors. It also sells tickets for local events and provides information about city tours.
